Odisha Allows Women to Work Night Shifts in Shops and Commercial Units – News12 Odisha

Bhubaneswar : The Odisha government has officially permitted women to work night shifts in shops and commercial establishments across the state. This progressive move, aimed at promoting gender inclusivity in the workforce, comes with a series of strict safety measures to protect women employees.
The Labour and E.S.I. Department recently issued a notification exempting such establishments from restrictions under Section 23 of the Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956. However, night shift employment is allowed only if certain mandatory conditions are met.
Employers must obtain *written consent* from women employees opting for night duty. A *minimum of three women* must be present during the shift. *Transport with GPS tracking* must be provided, and *drivers must undergo police verification*.
Workplaces must be equipped with *CCTV surveillance, proper lighting*, and access to *toilets and drinking water*.
The government’s move is seen as a step toward empowering women economically while ensuring their safety during late hours.
