Malta will host the eighth Commonwealth Youth Games in late 2027, featuring over 1,000 athletes aged 14-18 from 74 nations and territories competing in eight sports, including two debut sports – sailing and water polo, Commonwealth Sport announced on Thursday.The multi-sport event will take place across the islands of Malta and Gozo, utilizing existing world-class facilities arranged in four main clusters. Two athlete villages will be established using hotels, one on each island.The sporting program includes athletics and para athletics, netball, squash, swimming and para swimming, triathlon, and weightlifting, alongside the newly introduced sailing and water polo.The 2027 event will feature the largest Para sport program in CYG history, with para swimming making its first appearance following the introduction of para athletics at the 2023 games in Trinidad and Tobago.Malta, an island country in Southern Europe, is situated in the Mediterranean Sea between Sicily and North Africa.Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare said: “We are thrilled to bring the Commonwealth Youth Games to Malta in 2027 … Malta’s athlete-first proposal, world-class facilities, and proven experience in hosting international events make it an ideal host.”“The Commonwealth Youth Games are more than a captivating celebration of sport; they are a transformative experience for young athletes. We look forward to being on the beautiful island of Malta in 2027.”The selection of Malta reflects Commonwealth Sport’s commitment to bringing the Youth Games to new countries, particularly small and island nations.Approximately 1,150 athletes from Commonwealth Sport’s 74 nations and territories will participate in the games.The exact dates for the 2027 games are yet to be announced by Commonwealth Sport.India previously hosted the third edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune in 2008.
