Akash Deep pulled off a remarkable knock on Day 3 of the fifth and final Test at The Oval, scoring a gritty 66 as nightwatchman to frustrate England’s bowlers and help India regain control of the match. Coming in late on Day 2, Akash stayed firm alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal on the third morning, and the duo stitched together a crucial century stand for the third wicket. Their partnership brought composure to India’s innings and eventually helped them post 396 in the second innings. The stand also became the 18th hundred-run partnership of the series – the most ever in a Test series this century. Speaking to Cheteshwar Pujara after the day’s play, Akash Deep revealed that his intent had changed overnight. “I had definitely not planned for anything beforehand, but when I came in as the nightwatchman and went back to my room, then it was in my head that this day (Day 3) is very important, not just for the match, but also in the context of the series,” he said in a video posted on Sony Sports Network.
Determined not to throw his wicket away, the 27-year-old added, “I wanted to help my team reach a position from where I can do something when bowling as well. I had it in my mind that I shouldn’t get out. The ball can get me out, but I won’t lose my wicket myself.”
