Odisha Govt Grants ₹20 Lakh Compensation to Family of Soumyashree Bisi – News12 Odisha

Bhubaneswar : The Odisha government has provided financial assistance of ₹20 lakh to the family of Soumyashree Bisi, a 20-year-old B.Ed student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, who tragically died after attempting self-immolation due to alleged sexual harassment.

Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi handed over the compensation cheque on behalf of the state government, following an ex-gratia announcement by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on July 15, 2025. Additionally, the Balasore Red Cross extended ₹25,000 in aid to the grieving family.

Soumyashree had accused Samir Kumar Sahu, the Head of the Department, of harassment. Despite reportedly raising complaints with the college administration, no timely action was taken. Following her death, both Sahu and College Principal Dilip Ghosh were arrested under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and suspended from duty.

The State Crime Branch is currently investigating the case. The government has assured strict action against all responsible.
